We make Dia, so treat this as a first-party comparison. Every fact about Speak below comes from Speak's own website, its help center or its US App Store page as of November 2026, and the links are in the sources at the end. Where Speak is the better pick, we say so.

The short version: Speak suits English speakers who are learning Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian or Chinese, want a guided lesson path, and are ready to pay for a year. Dia suits you if your language isn't on Speak's list (German is the usual case), if your first language isn't English, or if you want open conversation without committing to a subscription.

How a practice session works in each

Speak is organized around lessons. Its App Store page describes AI-powered lessons with speaking exercises, and Speak Tutor, which the help center calls a 24/7 personal language coach, adds open conversation, grammar and vocabulary questions, and custom speaking activities on a topic you ask for. After each lesson, Speak uses your mistakes to build review and extra practice.

Dia starts with a conversation. You talk or type about whatever you like, at your level, and Dia answers in the language you're learning. When you get something wrong, you see the corrected form and a one-line explanation in your own language, and the conversation carries on. Dia also keeps what you told it about your goals and interests, and the words you've been working on come back in later conversations.

On Speak you mostly follow a path someone designed for you. On Dia you choose the topic and the tutor follows. If you freeze without a script, a lesson path helps; if scripted dialogues bore you, open conversation fits better.

Where Speak is the better choice

  • You're learning one of Speak's six languages, you know you'll keep going for a year, and price matters most. Speak Premium at $83.99 a year works out to about $7 a month. Dia's one-off pass is $9.99 for 30 days and new buyers can't get a yearly plan, so over a full year Speak costs less.
  • You want a course. Speak's lessons give you a sequence to work through. Dia gives you a conversation partner and leaves the topic to you.
  • You want pronunciation scored. Speak advertises assessment of pronunciation, intonation and fluency, so if a score on how you sound is what keeps you motivated, start there.

Where Dia is the better choice

  • Your language isn't one of Speak's six. Speak doesn't teach German at all, while Dia lets you choose Standard, Austrian or Swiss German. Across its 30+ languages Dia has other regional variants too, such as Mexican or Spain Spanish and French from France or Canada. If you're preparing for a German exam, our guide to the telc, ÖIF and Goethe B1 speaking tests shows how to practice each part.
  • English isn't your first language. Speak's help center says its courses in other languages are only open to learners whose native language is English. Dia explains in your own language and its interface runs in 35 languages, so a Brazilian learning German or a Turkish speaker learning French reads the explanations in Portuguese or Turkish.
  • You don't want a subscription. Dia sells a one-off $9.99 for 30 days, and the free account keeps giving you 10 messages a day after the 24 hours of Premium end. Speak's free trial lasts 7 days, and after that you need a paid plan.

What you pay, month by month

Prices depend on your country. Speak's own FAQ says pricing varies by plan, region and current promotions, so the figures here are the US App Store for Speak and Dia's web checkout for new buyers.

  • Trying it out: Speak gives you 7 days free. Dia gives you 24 hours of Premium, then 10 free messages a day with no end date.
  • One month: Speak Premium is $17.99. Dia is $9.99 for 30 days, or $4.99 a week if you'd rather pay weekly.
  • One year: Speak Premium is $83.99. Dia has no yearly plan for new buyers, and twelve 30-day passes would cost more than that.

Which should you pick?

  • English speaker, learning one of Speak's six languages, wants a guided path for a year: Speak.
  • Learning German, or any language Speak doesn't teach: Dia. Start with German here.
  • First language isn't English: Dia, because Speak's non-English courses require English as your native language.
  • Not sure yet: both let you try before paying. Use Speak's 7-day trial if you want lessons, and Dia's free account if you want to see whether daily conversation sticks.
