En 2018, Hartshorne, Tenenbaum y Pinker (MIT/Boston College) evaluaron el conocimiento gramatical de **669 498 hablantes nativos y no nativos de inglés** — el mayor conjunto de datos sobre adquisición de idiomas jamás reunido. Dos hallazgos te importan: 1. **La capacidad de aprender gramática se mantiene notablemente estable hasta ~17,4 años** y después baja de forma gradual — no existe el "precipicio a los 7" de la versión popular. Quien empieza tarde sigue progresando durante años, incluso décadas. 2. Quienes empezaron después de los 10–12 años **rara vez alcanzaron el techo nativo** en gramática sutil. El último paso — ser indistinguible de alguien criado en el idioma — sí se encarece. Es decir: la puerta está abierta. Lo caro es solo el último centímetro, y probablemente nunca lo necesitaste. La fluidez para trabajar fuera, discutir en inglés en una junta o ver series sin subtítulos queda cómodamente del lado alcanzable de la línea. ## ¿Por qué los niños parecen mucho mejores con los idiomas? Sobre todo porque la comparación está amañada. Los niños parecen aprender sin esfuerzo porque: - reciben **decenas de miles de horas de input** antes de los 10 años — un adulto en inmersión consigue una fracción; - pagan **cero costo de vergüenza** por hablar mal. Nadie se burla de la gramática de una niña de 4 años; - viven dentro de una **máquina de adquisición**: escuela, familia, parque, todo el día; - su progreso se compara con el de otros niños, no con adultos elocuentes. Cuando los investigadores igualan horas y condiciones, los adultos aguantan bien el tipo — y ganan a los niños en vocabulario, gramática explícita y lectura (el resultado clásico es Snow & Hoefnagel-Höhle 1978; DeKeyser 2000 añade la advertencia honesta sobre acento y morfología). Si años de inglés escolar no te hicieron fluido, no fue tu cerebro — fue que en clase casi nunca se hablaba. ## ¿El cerebro adulto sigue cambiando físicamente al aprender un idioma? Sí — de forma medible, en estudios de imagen: - **El volumen del hipocampo aumentó** en adultos aprendiendo un idioma en condiciones intensivas (Mårtensson et al. 2012, el estudio de la academia sueca de intérpretes; muestra pequeña, parcialmente replicada por Stein et al. 2012). - **La integridad de la materia blanca mejoró** con inmersión tardía (Pliatsikas et al. 2017). - **La corteza motora y auditiva** cambiaron de forma medible con entrenamiento de fonemas nuevos (Golestani et al. 2007). El hardware todavía se recablea. Lo que desaparece tras la infancia no es la plasticidad — es el *entorno protegido* donde recablearse sin pasar vergüenza.
